A Beginner’s Guide to Buying Baby Milk Bottles and Nipples

Sharing is caring!

Your baby is a bundle of joy and you want to have what’s best for them. Getting baby milk bottles is definitely one of the things that you should buy whenever you have your baby already.

Sure, there are some moms that would prefer breastfeeding their babies right from their own nipples, but the vast majority would like to have the convenience of feeding them off a bottle.

That being said, there is no magic formula to baby milk bottles because babies, like you and I, have preferences.

There are some that would just suck out of the bottle immediately after you put them in their mouths, while there are some that would find a particular configuration and would only feed if those conditions are met.

As a start, you buy a small selection of bottles with different nipple configurations. This is to help you find out if your baby prefers one nipple over the other or if they do not mind what kind of configuration they have at all.

Most of the baby milk bottle companies would create nipples that would mimic the feel of their mother’s own, so you may want to consider those things as well.

The Things You Need to Look for When Buying

When it comes to the materials of the bottle, the most common ones that you can find are made out of silicone, stainless steel, glass, and plastic.

Glass is the heaviest among the listed materials and although they are robust, they can shatter when they are pushed from a distance. The good thing about it, though, is that they are guaranteed to be BPA-free. They are a bit more expensive than plastic bottles, but if you want a more robust solution, then you cannot go wrong with this one (just make sure that it won’t shatter).

Plastic is the lightest and most of the baby milk bottles are made out of inexpensive and shatter-proof plastic. The only downside to that of plastic is that it may contain BPA, so always get one without any of those hazards.

Stainless steel is a bit light and unbreakable and they are also BPA-free as well. The thing is that they are pretty hard to find and they are quite expensive.

Silicone bottles pretty much share the same features to that of stainless steel bottles, but they are usually not sold in drugstores or groceries. This means that in the event that the nipple breaks, you have to order one again from an online store.

Choosing the Nipples

Milk Bottle nipples generally come in two types: silicone and latex. Silicone nipples are firm and they hold their shape together. This is ideal for babies who want to munch more than others. Latex nipples are more flexible and soft, but the problem is that they do not have the durability to last longer than silicone variants.

When choosing the nipples, it is important that you take into consideration its shape and size. The shape could either resemble a bulb with flat sides or ones that are flat at the top- mimicking the mother’s nipple.

The size and flow varies, but it is pretty straightforward since most of them come with age ranges to help you choose which one is right for your baby.
